Vision
Now more than ever, we need to lift students’ gifts and voices so they may share them joyfully — with one another, their community, and our world.
To meet this need, we have launched an ambitious $36.5 million campaign - Cor Unum: One Heart in Community - to build The Bishop John S. Cummins Center. This campaign began in 2018 and we are close to achieving our goal. The Cummins Center will be a place for everyone and will support the heart of the O’Dowd co-curricular experience. The Center will serve our entire community of students, parents, and alumni. With your support, our students’ total experience and community will become even stronger. We invite you to join us.
The Cummins Center, initially envisioned by former President Steve Phelps, will address long-overdue gaps on our campus. A 38,000-square-foot multi-purpose facility, the Cummins Center will feature a full-size court for athletic competition, modern strength and conditioning facilities, sophisticated drama and music studios, and two new classrooms.
O’Dowd is known for being forward thinking and innovative. The new building will ensure that the school remains a strong, competitive Catholic institution for generations of students in Oakland and surrounding communities.

The Center will be the central gathering place for the entire community of students, faculty, and staff to come together for:
Mass and other faith-based activities
Rallies that foster school pride and unity
Assemblies in which students share their diverse talents and cultures
Celebrations that honor school traditions
Events with alumni, parents, and the broader community
The Drama Studio will provide space for classroom instruction, rehearsals, and intimate performances.
The Music Studio will provide space for professional instruction, practice, and recording for soloists and jazz, string, and symphonic ensembles
The Gymnasium will include a full-size court and triple current seating capacity. This will allow O’Dowd to host post-season games with ample space for fans, friends, and families.
The Athletic Performance Lab will feature enhanced strength and conditioning equipment and sports medicine under one roof to accommodate more than 3,000 annual visits from students at every stage of fitness.
A multi-purpose classroom that can accommodate 50-60 people with advanced audio-visual presentation capabilities will serve as a flexible space for instruction, presentations, and events.
An additional, much-needed classroom to enhance student learning

"I gave to the Cor Unum Campaign because, as a lifelong Catholic educator, I know the Center will be a site for different styles of learning and engagement. I'm especially excited about the state-of-the-art classrooms. Learning looks different today than when the original building was designed, and it’s important that O’Dowd keep moving forward."

“What our children love most about Bishop O’Dowd is the friends they have made. O’Dowd brings together students diverse in beliefs, interests, and backgrounds who they wanted to get to know from the first minute they stepped on campus. We are so grateful for the people they have met and for all of the opportunities Bishop O’Dowd has created in their lives!"
Meghan O’Leary and Matthew Herreras, parents of Connor '21 and Lucy '24
“With three generations of my family graduating from O’Dowd, this community has always been a part of our family story. We tried to make our contribution as big as possible because, as an alum and now teacher, I want to make sure the campus is as vibrant when I leave as when I entered.”
Brian Cushing ’84 and Siobhan T.; parents of Robert '20 and Colleen '19; son of Sheila '57
“There are very few places that you can say changed your life, but my life changed when I went to O’Dowd. Imagine what will happen with the new Center’s new spaces for creativity and collaboration. I want to say thanks by empowering students that come after me with the access and opportunities that helped me grow.”
Christine Keener ’07
“Our family is inspired by the words of Mother Theresa. She taught us that ‘We can do small things with great love.’ Even though we couldn’t contribute a lot to the Cor Unum Campaign, we want to support O’Dowd because we know that the connections and relationships students build last a lifetime.”
Katie Cronin ’80 and Kelly Cronin ’80, Parents of Connor ’09 and Emma ’13
"People want to support a winner and O'Dowd is a winner. We are inspired that every year O'Dowd graduates a cohort of young people who go on to lead and help others in our community. If you believe in education, you can't ask for more than that."
Steve and Alison Burke, parents of Brendan '01, Molly '05
“We’re excited to have the performing arts students and athletes all in one place, and to celebrate Spirit Week and Mass as a whole community. The Center will make us feel more unified, connecting us with people from every part of the school.”
Juliette Tanios ‘22 and Parris Bates ‘22
“Dragon pride is powerful! We are a strong and connected group and we have an incredible influence in our communities — in the East Bay and beyond. Jack and I are delighted to help ensure that O’Dowd remains a dynamic and compelling institution for future generations of students.”
Rhonda Jackson Morris ‘83 and Jack Morris, Parents of Erica ‘21
“Community is a place that is full of diversity, with people of various religions and beliefs that work on problems together and help each other. A place where I have definitely felt community is in the Drama Department, where I’ve learned growth, discipline, and trying new things.”
Ben Nguyen ‘19
"Yes! Finally! When I was a student, the girls' basketball team never had the opportunity to use the strength and conditioning room because the space was so limited. Our athletic facilities never lived up to the stellar reputation of O'Dowd sports...until now! I am thrilled that students will have a beautiful space to showcase their talent that matches our Dragon Pride!"
Lisa Brue ‘85, Women's Varsity Basketball 1982-85, parent of Jalyn '19 and Lauryn '21
